What is an IPA file?
4 min read · Updated 2026-10-01
The basics
An IPA (iOS App Store Package) is an archive containing an iOS app's binary, resources and metadata.
To run on a device, an IPA must be signed with a certificate the device trusts.
Why signing matters
Apple requires every app to be code-signed. Free Apple IDs produce signatures that typically expire after 7 days; paid developer accounts last longer.
Staying safe
Only install files from sources you trust. Modified builds are not official App Store versions and may behave differently.
